Representing Jere Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Engr. Satomi Ahmad, FNSE, has flagged off a postgraduate scholarship scheme aimed at supporting 200 indigent students from Jere Local Government Area pursuing Master’s and Doctorate degrees.
The lawmaker launched the scheme on Monday during a ceremony held in Maiduguri, where he disclosed that the initiative would serve as an annual intervention to reduce the financial burden faced by postgraduate students.
In the first phase of the programme, a total of ₦22.5 million was disbursed directly to beneficiaries. Each Master’s student received a grant of ₦100,000, while Doctorate students received ₦150,000.
Satomi said the scheme was designed to promote academic excellence and empower youths through education.
“Education remains the most sustainable tool for development. By investing in our youths, we are investing in the future of Jere and Borno at large,” he said.
He pledged to sustain the programme throughout his tenure and beyond, describing it as part of his broader commitment to human capital development.
Speaking at the event, the Education Secretary of Jere Local Government, Dr. Mala Kulloma, lauded the initiative, saying it reflected the lawmaker’s consistent dedication to advancing education in the constituency.
“Hon. Satomi has continued to show unwavering support for education since he assumed office. This scholarship will surely inspire and relieve many students and their families,” he said.
A beneficiary, Ali Galadima, a PhD candidate in Geography at the University of Maiduguri, commended the gesture on behalf of the recipients.
“We are truly grateful to Hon. Satomi for this generous support. It will help us concentrate on our studies without financial distractions,” he said.
Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of cash awards to selected beneficiaries, while others received their funds via direct bank transfers, with many confirming receipt through instant alerts.
The event was attended by students, traditional and community leaders, academic stakeholders, and members of the constituency.
