Borno Partners AUN to Empower Chibok Girls’ Families, Reaffirm Commitment to Education

In a significant collaboration between the Borno State Government and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), economic empowerment items were distributed to members of the Chibok Girls Parents Association to support their livelihoods and ensure continued resilience.

Representing the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, Commissioner for Women Affairs, highlighted the administration’s dedication to providing support and ensuring the welfare of the Chibok girls and their families.

She acknowledged that the state government is currently hosting 20 freed Chibok girls, who are receiving care and attention as part of its ongoing commitment to rebuilding lives.

Dr. Deweyene P. Frazier, President and Vice Chancellor of AUN, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the education of the freed Chibok girls, stating, “We remain dedicated to ensuring the continuity of education for the freed girls in collaboration with other stakeholders. Education is the key to unlocking their future and fostering their empowerment.”

Hon. Pogu Lawan, Member of the Borno State House of Assembly representing Chibok Local Government, commended the partnership and the Governor’s efforts to improve the socio-economic conditions of Chibok families. He emphasized that initiatives like this provide a foundation for recovery and economic self-reliance.

The items distributed included eight Jega tricycles, 16 winnower machines, four rice destoner machines, four rice polisher machines, four corn thresher machines, two complete corn sheller machines with engines, two corn sheller machines without engines, and 16 rice cooking containers.

Yakubu Nkeke, Chairman of the Chibok School Girls Parents Association, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Borno State Government and AUN for their ongoing support. He said, “This support has rekindled hope in our lives. We appreciate the government and its partners for standing by us during these challenging times.”

Other stakeholders from Chibok Local Government, who attended the event, praised the collaborative efforts to rebuild and empower affected families. They called for continued partnership to ensure sustainable development for vulnerable communities.

This initiative reflects the strong commitment of the Borno State Government and AUN to addressing the needs of families impacted by insurgency, empowering them economically, and supporting the education and welfare of the freed Chibok girls.
