Borno Resident Doctors Praise Zulum Over Health Reforms, Welfare Gains

The Association of Resident Doctors Hospital Management Board Borno State has commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for reforms and sustained investment in the state’s health sector.

The commendation was made during a press conference addressed by the State Chairman of the association, Musa Karaji Modu, in Maiduguri.

Modu said the Zulum administration had demonstrated strong commitment to improving healthcare delivery through strategic interventions in medical training, infrastructure development and workforce welfare.

He noted that the payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) for 2025 and 2026 marked a significant milestone in strengthening capacity building and professional development among doctors in the state.

According to him, the successful upgrade of senior resident doctors and newly qualified consultant doctors had strengthened the healthcare system by improving career progression and boosting morale.

Modu disclosed that when the governor assumed office, there were only six resident doctors in the state service, but the number had increased to 56 with full support provided for residency training through the MRTF scheme.

“This marks a historic achievement in the health sector of Borno State, reflecting leadership that prioritises human capital development,” he said.

The chairman also highlighted the full accreditation of the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri by the West African College of Surgeons in key departments, including Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Radiology, Surgery and Anaesthesia.

He described the accreditation as a major step toward strengthening specialised healthcare delivery in the state.

Modu added that the government was making progress in addressing other demands, including promotions for doctors not in residency, provision of car loans and implementation of the newly approved Professional Allowance Table (PAT), which was currently under consideration.

In his remarks, Acting Secretary of the association, Ali Zubairu, commended the administration for prioritising the welfare of health workers.

He listed key interventions to include provision of accommodation for medical doctors and nurses, implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and payment of full rural allowances to doctors.

Zubairu said the measures had positioned health workers in the state to enjoy welfare packages comparable to their counterparts at the federal level.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery and ensuring quality services for residents of Borno State.
