The Borno State Government (BOSG) on Monday redeemed a pledge of N20 million, alongside the donation of a Hilux vehicle, 200 bags of 25kg rice, and 100 cartons of spaghetti to families of fallen heroes during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day commemoration at Ramat Square, Maiduguri.
The state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Umar Kadafur, who represented Governor Babagana Umara Zulum at the event, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting families of ex-servicemen who lost their lives in the fight against insurgency.
In his remarks, Kadafur described the Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a solemn occasion to honor the sacrifices, bravery, and patriotism of the armed forces.
“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is more than a ceremony; it is a solemn reminder of the importance of peace, security, and stability. It also underscores the immense sacrifices of our ex-servicemen, whose bravery and patriotism continue to inspire us,” Kadafur said.
He lauded the gallantry of the armed forces in the fight against insurgency, acknowledging their role in restoring hope to communities devastated by the Boko Haram insurgency.
It was recalled that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Zulum, recently donated N300 million to support families of soldiers who lost their lives in the ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
Kadafur reiterated the administration’s commitment to providing ongoing support for legionnaires and families of fallen heroes.
“This administration remains committed to upholding its shared responsibility. We will ensure that the families of our fallen heroes and our legionnaires receive the care and recognition they deserve,” he said.
During the event, Kadafur formally handed over the pledged N20 million, a Hilux vehicle for the Nigerian Legion, and food items for widows of ex-servicemen.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including representatives of the Chief Judge of Borno State, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the General Officer Commanding 7 Division, and commanders of the naval, air, and maritime components of Operation Hadin Kai. Also in attendance were the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the State Security Service, the Commandants of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Correctional Service.
Other notable attendees included representatives of His Royal Highness, the Shehu of Borno, the Nigerian Red Cross, members of the State Executive Council, and families of fallen heroes.
The Deputy Governor was accompanied by Dr. Bukar Tijjani, Secretary to the State Government, and other senior government officials.
