
Yobe State Governor, Hon. (Dr.) Mai Mala Buni, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 25 persons in a boat accident that occurred in Nguru Local Government Area of the state.
In a condolence message issued on Saturday, the governor described the incident as a monumental loss to the affected families and the entire state, noting that the tragedy has left many households in grief.
“It is with a heavy heart that I received the shocking and devastating news of the boat mishap in Nguru Local Government Area, which claimed 25 lives, with 14 persons still missing and 13 others rescued,” Governor Buni said.
The governor prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and directed that those rescued from the incident be given immediate medical attention.
“I pray that more survivors will be rescued and reunited with their families,” he added.
Meanwhile, Governor Buni has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Yobe State Fire Service, and the Nguru Local Government Council to intensify search and rescue operations in order to locate those still missing.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Friday when a canoe conveying 52 passengers from Adiyani in Jigawa State to Garbi in Nguru Local Government Area capsized, resulting in multiple casualties.
The governor also cautioned residents against the overloading of canoes and vehicles, stressing that adherence to safety measures is essential to prevent avoidable accidents.
He further directed SEMA to provide immediate relief and support to the families of the victims, while search and rescue efforts continue.
