Yobe State Governor, Hon. (Dr) Mai Mala Buni, has been conferred with the traditional title of Matawallen Gudi and has called on parents, elders and traditional institutions to take greater responsibility for the moral upbringing of children.
The title was formally conveyed to the governor on Sunday in Damaturu when councillors of the Gudi Emirate Council presented him with a letter confirming the chieftaincy honour.
Speaking at the presentation, Governor Buni described moral guidance of the youth as a collective responsibility, stressing that strong values are essential for building a stable and progressive society.
“As parents, elders and traditional authorities, we all have an obligation towards the moral upbringing of our youth,” the governor said. “The youth are future leaders who deserve responsible mentoring to produce good leaders and followers for a sane society.”
He further advised young people to shun drug abuse and other social vices, noting that discipline and focus are key to achieving a prosperous future.
Governor Buni also assured the Gudi Emirate Council of his commitment to contributing to the development of the emirate and the wellbeing of its people.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and Waziri of Gudi, Alhaji Hussaini Masaya, said the emirate council found Governor Buni worthy of the title of Matawallen Gudi in recognition of his leadership qualities and service.
He explained that the office of Matawallen Gudi qualifies the governor as one of the kingmakers of the Gudi Emirate, adding that the council appreciated his acceptance of the title and willingness to serve the emirate in that capacity.
The presentation was witnessed by traditional leaders and government officials.
The statement was signed by Mamman Mohammed, Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the Governor.
