Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has urged the military authorities to expedite the counter-insurgency operations in the Lake Chad Basin Region, seeking a quick end to the war.
Speaking at the 1st International Conference organized by the Department of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Maiduguri, Buratai commended the military for their sacrifices and efforts against outlawed groups.
He emphasized the need to avoid prolonging the conflict, citing the examples of Colombia and Sri Lanka.
Buratai highlighted the crucial role of combined military operations, involving military intelligence, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and collaboration with local authorities, in addressing the security challenges in the region. He expressed confidence in the military’s ability to reclaim territories and end the war swiftly.
“We believe the war should end in a very short time and shouldn’t prolong like those in countries of Columbia and Sri Lanka,” he stated.
The former army chief recalled the successes achieved under his leadership, including the reclamation of nine local government areas in Borno within five months.
University of Maiduguri’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba, praised the institution’s resilience, citing its ability to resist attempts and pressures to shut down despite four successive suicide bomber attacks on the campus.
The conference aimed to bring together experts and stakeholders to discuss strategies for addressing the security challenges in the region and promoting peace and development.
