CAC Borno Office Visits UNIMAID VC, Seeks Partnership on Student Entrepreneurship

The Borno State Head Office of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has paid a congratulatory courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, with a view to fostering collaboration on entrepreneurship and business development for students.

The delegation, led by Assistant Director Jacob John Waba, was received by the Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at his office in the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Waba said the purpose of the engagement was to explore possible partnerships between the Commission and the university, particularly in empowering students with early access to business registration services.

He explained that CAC is responsible for the regulation and management of registered businesses, nonprofits, and corporate organizations in Nigeria, noting that the country currently boasts over 40 million registered entrepreneurs.

“With the reality that not all graduates can secure white-collar jobs, the Commission is working with tertiary institutions to raise awareness about the importance of registering businesses early. This would equip students with the tools to venture into entrepreneurship even before graduation,” Waba said.

He added that with the backing of the Bank of Industry, young entrepreneurs could access up to ₦5 million in funding at single-digit interest rates — an opportunity he urged students to take seriously.

Responding, Professor Mele expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the CAC’s drive to promote youth entrepreneurship. He noted that the Commission has had a longstanding relationship with the university and welcomed the prospect of deeper collaboration.

“We already have a functional Entrepreneurship Centre where our students receive training, and we see this initiative as a perfect complement to our existing efforts,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

He further suggested that the partnership could also extend to university staff and assured the CAC team of the institution’s support for any collaborative initiative aimed at empowering students and enhancing economic development in the region.
