The Consul General of the Republic of Chad in Maiduguri, Mr. Bisso Youssouf Mbodou Mbami, has called for deeper security and economic cooperation between Nigeria and Chad to strengthen efforts against cross-border crime and insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin region.
Mr. Bisso made the call when he led a delegation from the Chadian Consulate on a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri.
He said closer synergy between the armed forces of both nations was crucial in sustaining the momentum against Boko Haram and other criminal networks threatening regional peace and stability.
The Consul General commended the Nigerian military for its resilience and sacrifices in the ongoing counterterrorism operations, describing the partnership between Nigerian and Chadian troops as “a model of regional cooperation.”
On cross-border trade, Mr. Bisso urged for continued dialogue to resolve existing communication gaps, assuring that the Chadian government was sensitizing its citizens on Nigeria’s trade laws and contraband policies.
“Mutual understanding and cooperation are key to sustaining border commerce and trust between our peoples,” he said.
In his response, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with Chad under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) framework to safeguard shared borders and waterways.
Describing Chad as “a trusted brother and strategic ally,” General Abubakar stressed the importance of information sharing and coordination in addressing emerging security threats.
“It is our duty to protect legitimate trade and ensure that goods and livelihoods do not fall into the hands of terrorists,” he said.
The visit also provided an opportunity for discussions on regional stability, cross-border trade, and the welfare of Chadian citizens in Nigeria.
Mr. Bisso was accompanied by the Consulate’s Liaison Officer, Major Oumar Tahir Attahir.
The event featured the exchange of souvenirs, signing of the visitors’ register, and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
