
The Gombe State Police Command has announced the assumption of duty of Commissioner of Police Umar Ahmed Chuso as the 24th Commissioner of Police in the state.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, said CP Chuso took over from CP Bello Yahaya, who has been redeployed by the Inspector-General of Police to the Police Staff College, Jos.
Upon assuming duty, CP Chuso called for sustained cooperation from residents and key stakeholders to effectively tackle crime and other social vices across the state. He emphasised his commitment to strengthening community-based policing as a strategy for crime prevention, intelligence-led policing and improved police–community relations.
The new police commissioner hails from Sokoto South Local Government Area of Sokoto State. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and joined the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
Throughout his career, CP Chuso has served in several strategic positions, including Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command; Deputy Commandant, Police Staff College, Jos; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Kano State Command; and Deputy Commissioner of Police, CID, Kano State Command.
He also served as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Delta State Command, and as the pioneer Area Commander, Argungu, Kebbi State. Other postings include CSP Administration, Kebbi State Command; Directing Staff at the Police College, Kaduna; various Divisional Police Officer roles; and service at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Interpol Section, Abuja.
The statement added that CP Chuso has attended several professional courses both locally and internationally, including Citizenship and Leadership Course, Advanced Detective Course, Tactical Leadership and Command Course, Protection of Human Rights Course at Texas Southern University, Houston, USA, and the Higher Military Strategy Course at the Army War College, Abuja. He is a Member of the Nigerian Institute of Police Studies (MNIPS).
CP Chuso called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups and religious organisations to strengthen collaboration with the police through active participation in community-based policing and timely sharing of credible information.
He reassured residents of his commitment to the protection of lives and property and to the sustenance of peace and security across Gombe State.
