A crisis has erupted within the Adamawa State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) as the local government chairmen of the party have taken decisive action by removing the state chairman, Christopher Nicholas, along with all members of the state executive committee.
In a bold move, eighteen out of the 21 local government chairmen of the LP in Adamawa State convened in Yola, the state capital, to address what they perceived as incompetence within the party leadership.
Led by Rev Iliya Mathias, the state chairman of the LP Association of Local Government of Nigeria and chairman of the party in Hong LGA, the chairmen accused Nicholas of incapacity in managing the party’s affairs.
The chairmen cited various grievances against Nicholas, including allegations of engaging in anti-party activities, holding dual chairmanship positions in the Labour Party and Accord Party, mismanagement of party resources, strained relationships with party stakeholders, and poor performance in the 2023 governorship election.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with Nicholas’ leadership, the Adamawa LG chairmen announced the formation of a seven-member state caretaker committee.
Hon Theman Jonah was appointed as the caretaker chairman, supported by Apwanokona Azmaveth as secretary, Aliyu Mohammed Abubakar as treasurer, Henry Kwataden as PRO, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed as woman leader, Kamalludeen Aliyu as youth leader, and Auwal Chiroma as a member.
In response to the upheaval, Apostle Ezra Kwaya, a member of Nicholas’ executivecommittee, expressed surprise at the sudden removal, highlighting the lack of prior written complaints from the local government chairmen regarding the state leadership.
The situation remains tense as the LP National Working Committee is awaited to address the unfolding developments within the party.
