The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Taraba State, Dr. Augustina, on Friday commissioned Transit Schools and Learning Centres established by the National Commission for Almajiri and Out of School Children Education (NCAOOSCE) across three local government areas of the state.
The centres, located in Jalingo, Lau, and Sardauna Local Government Areas, were created in response to a recent mop-up exercise by the Commission which identified a high number of out-of-school children due to limited access to formal education.
Each centre is structured to operate three hours daily and is staffed by three locally recruited teachers, specializing in English Language, Mathematics, and Civic Education.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Augustina commended the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Education and the NCAOOSCE for identifying underserved areas in the state. She described the initiative as a welcome development and a significant boost to the free education policy championed by Governor Agbu Kefas.
“This initiative complements our existing programmes,” she said. “The Ministry is committed to supporting the Commission in ensuring the smooth transition of learners into the formal school system.”
She further called on parents and guardians to take advantage of the opportunity and send their children to the centres to acquire quality foundational education.
Also present at the event were the Chairperson of Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB), Mrs. Christiana Taninga Binga; the Special Adviser on Islamic Religious Matters; the Coordinator of the programme, Dr. Sani Mamman Ibrahim; as well as board members, directors, security personnel, and traditional rulers.
The centres are expected to bridge educational gaps and lay the groundwork for reintegrating out-of-school children into mainstream learning.
