Earned, Special Allowances Top Agenda in SSANU–FG Renegotiation

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) says ongoing renegotiation talks with the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) have reached a crucial stage, with key discussions focusing on conditions of service and statutory earned allowances.

In an update issued on April 9, 2026, the union disclosed that deliberations at the seventh meeting in the 2026 renegotiation series centered on conditions of service and a review of statutory (earned) allowances, including other special allowances for its members.

The union noted that the meeting, held on April 8, marked significant progress in negotiations, particularly on financial and welfare-related components affecting university workers nationwide.

According to SSANU, the meeting was adjourned for another one week following an offer presented by the Federal Government, with both negotiating teams directed to consult further with their principals before reconvening.

The union also announced that a special meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) has been scheduled to deliberate on the outcome of the latest discussions.

It stated that arrival for the NEC meeting is slated for April 17, while the main meeting will hold on April 18, with departure fixed for April 19, 2026.

SSANU reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing improved welfare, allowances, and working conditions for university workers through sustained dialogue with the government.
