Eid el-Kabir: Sultan Calls on Muslims to Search for New Moon Thursday

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Muslims to search for the new moon of Dhul Hijja on Thursday, June 6, 2024, marking the beginning of the 12th month in the Islamic calendar.

In a statement issued by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, the Sultan declared Thursday as the 29th day of Dhul’qidah 1445 AH, and appealed to Muslims to report any sighting of the new moon to their local district or village heads. This information will then be communicated to the Sultan.

The Dhul-Hijjah month holds great significance in the Islamic calendar, as it is one of the sacred months during which the Hajj pilgrimage and Eid-al-Adha celebrations take place.

Eid-al-Adha, also known as Eid el-Kabir, is a significant holiday commemorating the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son.

The sighting of the new moon marks the beginning of preparations for Eid el-Kabir, which will be celebrated from the 10th to the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.
