El-kanemi Warriors FC approached the semi-final match against Kebbi United with determination, dominating the first half and creating more than three clear scoring chances.
The first opportunity was missed by Jacob Jonathan in the 16th minute, and he also missed a one-on-one chance in the 40th minute, which was saved by the United goalkeeper.
Despite their relentless attacks, El-kanemi Warriors failed to convert their chances, leading to a goalless first half and second half, dragging the match into penalty shootouts.
Yobo took the first kick for El-kanemi and scored, leveling with United’s first successful kick. Kebbi United’s second kick was saved single-handedly by El-kanemi’s keeper, Abine George, marking the only missed kick of the day in the Abuja Goal Project semi-final.
The teams continued scoring until the last kick by El-kanemi’s young Risalanu Ismail, which secured the victory and ignited celebrations among El-kanemi Warriors FC players, officials, and fans. The match ended 5-4 in favor of El-kanemi Warriors FC.
Speaking after the game, Borno State Commissioner of Sports Development, YouthEmploymentand Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Sainna Buba, highlighted that today’s victory was the first for El-kanemi Warriors FC in the past 31 years. He expressed gratitude to the club mentor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, for providing all necessary support.
The Commissioner assured that El-kanemi Warriors are prepared to beat Abia Warriors, the other team that qualified after defeating Kano Pillars. He emphasized that the Governor, all supporters, and sports-loving people of Borno State are backing El-kanemi Warriors.
The commissioner also stressed that there is peace in Borno, demonstrated by the league matches played in Maiduguri to qualify for the Premier League. He reiterated that sports transcend religion and tribe, serving as a unifying factor in Nigeria.
Team Technical Advisor, Coach Aliyu Zubairu, attributed the team’s victory to hard work. He acknowledged the challenging league journey, preparation during the Super 8 in Enugu, and the initial focus on promotion to the Premier League.
Once the team reached the third round of the Federation Cup, it became evident that advancing to the semi-final and final was achievable.
He acknowledged the stress on his players but assured that they have a week to rest before the final against Abia Warriors, during which they will perform exceptionally.
Supporters from all walks of life celebrated with the winning team after the final whistle. El-kanemi Warriors FC will now face Abia Warriors in the final match of the 2024 President Federation Cup on June 29, 2024, at MKO Abiola National Stadium.
