The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Gombe State under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.
Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who facilitated the approval, described it as a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to modernise and transform the livestock sector in the state.
The veterinary facility, upon completion, will serve as a key centre for diagnosis, treatment, research, and training, with the aim of enhancing livestock health and productivity across Gombe and neighbouring states in northern Nigeria.
Speaking during a two-day technical mission to Gombe, the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr Sanusi Abubakar, confirmed the development. He led a federal delegation to inspect ongoing livestock initiatives and assess progress on the proposed hospital.
Abubakar said the project marked a new phase in infrastructure development targeted at improving animal health systems, disease surveillance, and certification of livestock products for both local consumption and international export.
“This is a pilot project. Nothing of this scale has been done elsewhere in the country. Gombe is the first, and we hope it will serve as a model for other states,” he stated.
The hospital will be sited in the newly established 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone in Gombe. The zone already hosts an ultramodern abattoir, an international livestock market, a tannery, and a leather factory.
According to Abubakar, the zone is central to the broader strategy of positioning Gombe as a hub for livestock innovation and agribusiness in Nigeria.
The federal team included representatives from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, animal health experts from the L-PRES National Coordination Office, and other specialists, who conducted feasibility studies and inspections at the proposed location.
Gombe State L-PRES Coordinator, Prof. Usman Bello Abubakar, who received the delegation, said the project was a landmark intervention that would benefit generations. He assured that the state government would remain committed to the project’s successful implementation.
“We are grateful to the national office for this confidence. Gombe is ready to deliver, and we are committed to meeting all standards,” he said.
The Project Manager of Lubell Nigeria Ltd, the construction firm handling the project, Ms Asabe, also assured of quality work and timely delivery in accordance with contractual specifications.
The project aligns with the Inuwa Yahaya administration’s development agenda and the federal government’s vision for livestock sector reform under the L-PRES initiative.
