The Federal Government has directed all higher institutions in Nigeria to submit their matriculation lists to the Federal Ministry of Education within three months after matriculation ceremonies. This move aims to combat fake degree mills and certificate racketeering in the country.
The initiative follows an investigative report exposing fake degree mills in the Benin Republic, which led to a ban on the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo.
The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, has approved recommendations from an inter-ministerial committee to implement measures against fake degrees.
The education ministry has instructed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to enforce the mandatory requirement for all tertiary institutions to conduct admissions processes through the Central Admissions Processing System and submit matriculation lists regularly.
