FG Orders Varsities, Polytechnics to Publish Budgets, Student Data Online

The Federal Government has directed all heads of federal tertiary institutions to publish their annual budgets and other key institutional data on their official websites.

The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, issued the directive on Saturday in a statement signed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Boriowo Folasade.

Alausa said the move was part of ongoing efforts to entrench transparency, accountability and good governance in Nigeria’s education sector.

According to the statement, vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are to make public their annual budgetary allocation, including detailed breakdowns of personnel costs, overheads and capital expenditures.

“Institutions are also to disclose research grant revenues, clearly distinguishing between funds sourced locally and those received from international bodies such as foreign institutions, multilateral organisations and development partners,” the statement read.

The minister further directed that allocations from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for the current year must be displayed, along with the total value of each institution’s endowment fund as of the end of the previous year.

“This data must be updated quarterly and published in a clear, accessible format for public visibility,” he added.

He stated that institutions must also present their current total student population, categorised into undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to give a clearer picture of enrolment capacity.

Alausa emphasised that the information must be easily accessible on the institutions’ websites and presented in a user-friendly format for students, parents and stakeholders.

“All federal institutions are expected to comply fully and update their websites no later than May 31, 2025,” he said.

The directive comes amid concerns over lack of transparency in the management of public tertiary institutions in the country.
