Final-Year Biochemistry Student Attacks Lecturer at University of Maiduguri

A final-year Biochemistry student of the University of Maiduguri on Thursday attempted to attack Prof. Yagana Shettima at the department around 11:30 a.m.

The student, identified as the son of Buba Zarami and bearing a 2015 matriculation number, allegedly assaulted the lecturer with a knife over a carry-over grade.

Although he failed to carry out the murder, he inflicted a slight injury on the professor’s arm before security personnel intervened and rescued her.

Reacting to the incident, students of the university condemned the attack, describing it as “utterly reprehensible” and inconsistent with the institution’s values.

In a statement signed by the General Coordinator of University Students (GCUS), Hafiz Mohammed Bello, the student body disassociated itself from the act and expressed concern over the development.

“This behavior is utterly reprehensible and does not reflect the values and principles of our institution. We apologize for any distress or concern this incident may have caused,” the statement read.

The students assured the public that the incident was isolated and did not represent the character of the university’s student body.

They reaffirmed their commitment to upholding academic excellence and moral integrity while calling on their colleagues to embrace respect, tolerance, and non-violence.

Meanwhile, university authorities are expected to take necessary disciplinary measures, while security officials have commenced investigations into the incident.
