Fire Razes Kariyari Market In Yobe, Destroys Over 1,600 Households

A massive fire has ravaged the Kariyari Market in Lantewa Ward, Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, destroying over 1,600 households and causing widespread devastation to property and livelihoods.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday and spread rapidly, engulfing homes, shops, and makeshift structures before emergency services could respond.

“As we speak, relevant authorities are working to uncover what triggered the fire incident. This is a huge loss to our people,” a community source told Zagazola Makama.

Victims of the inferno, many of whom were left with nothing, appealed to the government and humanitarian organizations for immediate support. They described the tragedy as overwhelming, saying they had lost everything – from food and clothing to lifelong investments in the market.

Efforts are currently underway by emergency responders to assess the full extent of the damage and to mobilize relief materials for the affected population.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA) is expected to release an official statement in the coming days regarding the response strategy and assistance for displaced families.
