Fire Razes Over 100 Thatched Shelters in Monguno IDP Camp

A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed more than 100 thatched shelters at the Water Board Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident on Saturday through its Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahun Daso, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri.

According to Daso, the fire broke out on Friday at about 4:30 p.m. and was reported to the Monguno Police Station by the camp chairman, Bukar Mbati.

“The fire engulfed over 100 thatched houses, destroying foodstuffs and other household items in the raging inferno,” he said.

He explained that personnel of the state fire service, alongside the police and other security agencies deployed at the camp, responded promptly and succeeded in bringing the fire under control.

Daso added that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Monguno led a patrol team to the scene to carry out an on-the-spot assessment, while photographs of the incident were taken for documentation.

“Fortunately, no life was lost and no injury was recorded. However, the value of properties destroyed is yet to be determined,” he stated.

The police spokesperson further disclosed that investigations had commenced to determine the cause of the fire.

The Water Board IDP Camp in Monguno hosts thousands of displaced persons affected by years of insurgency in parts of northern Borno.
