At least 9 people have died and around 5,000 households have been displaced due to flooding in Yobe State, with 30 communities affected across 12 local government areas.
The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Tuesday reported that heavy windstorms and rainfall caused the disaster, which has left a trail of destruction and despair. The worst-hit areas include Damaturu, Nangere, Nguru, Bade, Yunusari, Fika, and Gulani, with over 1,385 households displaced and 9 deaths recorded across four LGAs.
The affected communities include Amaturu, Warsala, Kukareta, Furi, Sumsumma, Old Nangere, Gari-Dish, Nangere, Magurau, Garin-Ari, Chilariye, Dawasa, Garin-Disu, and Tsohon-Nguru, among others.
SEMA has mobilized resources to support the victims, with local government emergency management committees, LGA teams, and community volunteers working tirelessly to evacuate and profile those affected.
The agency has urged LGA teams and stakeholders to intensify sensitization efforts, particularly in high-risk areas, to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
“We are working closely with local authorities and community volunteers to provide support to those affected,” said a SEMA official. “We urge residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.”
The Yobe State Government has pledged to provide necessary support to those affected, and the SEMA is working to ensure that relief materials reach those in need.
