At least four passengers were killed and four others injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated under a commercial vehicle in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, the Borno State Police Command has confirmed.
Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred on March 19, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., when a Golf 3 vehicle driven by Wakil Fari was traveling from Kimba to Biu Town.
Upon reaching Sabon Garin Kimba Junction, the vehicle triggered the IED, resulting in a massive explosion that killed three female passengers and one male passenger on the spot.
Four other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately taken to General Hospital Biu for treatment. The corpses of the deceased were confirmed dead by doctors and deposited at the hospital mortuary before being released to their relatives.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the IED was planted by suspected ISWAP terrorists, likely targeting military personnel deployed in the area.
Military personnel have since secured the area, conducting sweeps to detect additional threats and ensure the safety of road users. Authorities have also launched community awareness campaigns on the risks of unexploded ordnance.
