The people of Ganye Constituency in Adamawa State have issued a protest notice over the continued absence of a representative in the State House of Assembly, following the death of their elected member one year ago.
The peaceful protest, slated for Thursday, June 12, will coincide with the Democracy Day celebration and is aimed at drawing attention to the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat.
In a statement signed by the leader of the group, Abdulrahman Njidda, the concerned citizens expressed dissatisfaction over what they described as neglect of their constitutional right to representation.
โNotice is hereby given that some concerned citizens of Ganye intend to commemorate the upcoming Democracy Day by staging a peaceful protest against the Independent National Electoral Commissionโs inability to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacant seat occasioned by the passing of our late Honourable Member, Adamawa State House of Assembly, a year ago,โ the statement read.
Njidda urged all indigenes of Ganye and other well-meaning citizens to participate in the protest, which he said is planned to be peaceful and well-coordinated.
According to the notice, protesters are to assemble at the Ganye Local Government roundabout by 6:00 a.m., move to Atiku Junction by 7:00 a.m., and finally proceed to the INEC office by 8:00 a.m., where a formal protest letter will be submitted.
The organisers also assured that security personnel will be on ground to ensure law and order, and to prevent any breach by miscreants.
They emphasized that the protest would be conducted peacefully, in line with democratic principles, and urged participants to avoid any unruly behaviour.
Efforts to reach the Adamawa State INEC office for comment were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
