The Gombe State House of Assembly has passed into law the Education Development Trust Fund Bill, 2027, aimed at ensuring sustainable funding for education across the state.
The legislation is expected to provide steady financing for the development and maintenance of infrastructure in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
Presenting the report of the House Committee on Education, the committee’s chairman, Honourable Shuaibu Adamu Haruna, said the bill would enhance access to quality education at all levels in Gombe State.
He explained that the committee adopted best practices from states such as Niger, Kano and Kaduna to strengthen the provisions of the legislation.
Honourable Haruna also disclosed that a one-day public hearing was organised to allow stakeholders to make inputs into the bill, noting that their contributions enriched the final document.
Following deliberations, the bill was read for the third time by the Clerk of the House, Barrister Rukkaiya Adamu Jalo, and subsequently passed into law. The Speaker of the House expressed optimism that effective implementation of the law would significantly boost the education sector in the state.
Meanwhile, the House screened nominees submitted by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for appointment into the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Those screened include Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad, Engineer Ahmad Usman Pindiga, Talatu Abubakar, Dr Usman Abba Arabi, Engineer Suleman Usman, and Lydia Ali.
Speaking after the screening, the nominees described the commission as a positive development that would attract investors and improve electricity supply in the state. They assured residents that challenges such as unstable power supply and excessive billing would be addressed once the commission becomes fully operational.
The House later adjourned its sitting to Tuesday next week.
