Gombe State has been recognized as the second-best performing state in climate governance performance among the 36 states of Nigeria, receiving an AA rating.
The award was presented by the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) during an event in Abuja on Thursday.
Gombe State scored 128 points, closely following Lagos State, which ranked first with 182 points. The ranking was based on five themes: climate change institutional arrangements, climate policy and action plan, climate budget and finance, implementation and monitoring, and online visibility concerning climate action.
Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Water, and Forest Resources, Mohammed Sa’idu Fawu, expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized that the award would motivate the state to intensify its efforts in environmental sustainability.
The Governor highlighted his administration’s efforts to address climate action, combat land degradation, and support livelihoods through initiatives such as the Gombe Goes Green Project (3G), which aims to plant and nurture one million trees annually, and the transition to renewable energy through solar-powered projects.
