Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has launched a vaccination campaign against Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) to curb the outbreak that recently affected Nafada Local Government Area.
Representing the Governor, Deputy Governor Manassah Daniel Jatau, Ph.D., performed the flag-off ceremony at the Emir’s Palace in Nafada on Monday. He emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ health and well-being.
The outbreak, which started in February, affected 302 people, resulting in 26 deaths. The government, with support from donor agencies and traditional leaders, has intensified efforts to contain the spread.
Deputy Governor Jatau urged collective action, appreciating the contributions of partners like WHO, UNICEF, and MSF. He appealed to the public to dispel misconceptions and prioritize seeking medical attention.
Commissioner of Health Dr. Habu Dahiru and Executive Secretary Dr. Abdulrahaman Shuaibu (represented by Dr. Maryam Abubakar) emphasized the importance of vaccination, targeting persons aged 1-29, excluding pregnant mothers.
Goodwill messages came from WHO, NPHCDA, and MSF representatives, commending the state government’s efforts. The Council Chairman and Emir of Nafada also expressed appreciation and called for community support.
The event featured the administration of CSM vaccines and presentation of vaccination cards by the Deputy Governor, Emir, Chairman, and Head of Civil Service.
