Gombe Gov Appoints Deaf Graduate to Disability Commission

Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State has appointed Yusuf Kumo, a 29-year-old deaf political science graduate, as a part-time member of the Gombe State Disability Commission.

The appointment, conveyed in a letter dated December 24, 2024, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, was made in recognition of Kumo’s achievements, experience, and commitment to service.

The letter stated that the appointment is at the discretion of the governor and may be terminated at any time.

Speaking with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, Kumo expressed appreciation for the opportunity and pledged to work towards advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.

“I intend to bring my experience and dedication to this role. Having served with the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities during my NYSC, I understand the challenges and opportunities within the disability community,” he said.

Kumo, who represents Gombe Central on the commission, said his focus would be on creating sustainable empowerment opportunities to reduce dependence and disabled begging.

“As a political science graduate with expertise in ICT and public relations, I am committed to advocating for policies that promote inclusion and economic independence for persons with disabilities,” he added.

He commended Governor Yahaya for ensuring the representation of youth, women, and persons with disabilities in governance.

“The governor has demonstrated fairness by promoting inclusivity in his administration. I appreciate this gesture and look forward to contributing to the development of the disability community,” Kumo said.

The Gombe State Disability Commission was established to advocate for policies that enhance the welfare of persons with disabilities, ensuring equal access to opportunities and improved living conditions.
