Gombe Gov Approves Over 100% Increase in Scholarship Allowance

Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has approved an increase of over 100 per cent in scholarship allowances for students across all categories in the state.

This is in line with the governor’s commitment to promoting education, inclusiveness and youth development.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Aishatu Maigari, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Maigari said the governor’s approval followed his July 21 media chat where he promised a major review of the scholarship scheme.

She said the increment affects students undergoing PhD, MSc, PGD, BSc, HND, NCE, ND and Certificate programmes.

“The governor has also expanded the list of beneficiaries and directed timely disbursement of allowances,” she said.

Maigari noted that the initiative aligns with the administration’s declaration of a state of emergency on education and its ongoing reforms aimed at revitalising the sector.

She added that the governor had also approved an increase in scholarship allowances for persons with disabilities.

This, she said, complements the recent establishment of the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

“Gov. Yahaya remains committed to inclusive governance and ensuring that no group is left behind in the pursuit of education and development,” Maigari said.

It will be recalled that the governor had earlier cleared all outstanding scholarship payments to students, a move widely commended by stakeholders in the education sector.

Meanwhile, the Gombe State Scholarship Board said it would soon announce dates and procedures for verification and screening of eligible students.

The board urged students to stay informed through official channels to avoid missing out on the exercise.
