
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat mishap that occurred on the Nafada River, which claimed the lives of five teenagers on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by the Director-General, Press Affairs, Government House, Gombe, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the deceased were identified as Najib Ibrahim (18), Hauwa’u Jidda Adamu Siddi Dogal (15), Ummati Haruna Baraya (16), Umaira Gidado (16), and Amina Jaliya (15).
Governor Yahaya described the incident as heartbreaking and painful, noting that the loss of young and promising lives was a great tragedy not only to their families but also to the entire Nafada community and the state at large.
“This is a very tragic and unfortunate incident that has cut short the lives of promising young people. My heart goes out to their parents, families, and the entire Nafada community at this difficult time. The loss of these young souls is not only a tragedy to their immediate families but to all of us as a people,” the governor said.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Nafada Local Government Area, praying Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the fortitude to bear the loss.
Governor Yahaya also emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety standards in water transportation, urging local government councils, community leaders, and boat operators to ensure compliance with all safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
He directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the Nafada Local Government Council to provide necessary support to the affected families and collaborate with relevant agencies to enhance safety and awareness in riverine areas.
“On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, I extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and pray that Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgives their shortcomings and grants them Jannatul Firdaus,” the governor added.
