Gombe Governor Flags Off 620KW Hydro-Solar Hybrid Power Project in Balanga

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has flagged off the commencement of a 620KW hydropower-solar hybrid electricity system in Balanga Local Government Area to enhance rural electrification and drive sustainable industrial development.

The initiative, which combines small hydropower and solar photovoltaic technologies, is designed to provide clean, reliable, and renewable energy to communities around Balanga Dam.

A statement by Mr. Jack A. Tasha, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity (Deputy Governor’s Office), said the Governor was represented at the launch by his deputy, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau.

Describing the project as a “major milestone,” Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to energy security, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.

“This project is timely and strategic. It speaks directly to our vision of self-reliance, sustainability, and inclusive growth. Power is the backbone of modern development, and this system will transform lives, stimulate agriculture, create jobs, and enhance living standards in Balanga and beyond,” Yahaya said.

Funded by the European Union (EU), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the Federal Government through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the project is being implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

REA Managing Director, Mr. Abba Aliyu, said the agency would complete the solar component within a month. He lauded Governor Yahaya’s proactive leadership, noting that Gombe is among the first states to benefit from the $750 million national rural electrification fund.

UNIDO Regional Director, Amb. Philbert Johnson, praised the state for securing the first such hybrid system in Nigeria, emphasizing its role in boosting agricultural productivity and spurring local industries.

The GEF representative also commended Gombe’s alignment with national energy transition priorities and praised the governor’s consistency in fulfilling counterpart funding obligations.

Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Mr. Saidu Muhammed Fawu, described the project as “a shining example of strategic partnerships delivering real change.” Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Mr. Sanusi Ahmed Pindiga, attributed the project’s success to the governor’s political will.

Chairman of Balanga LGA, Hon. Ibrahim Salisu, and Member representing Balanga North, Hon. Musa Buba, both applauded the governor for engaging key development stakeholders.

Traditional ruler of the area, the Bala Waja, HRH Mohammed Danjuma Mohammed, welcomed the development as a “historic moment,” pledging his chiefdom’s full support for the project’s protection.

In recognition of his efforts, Dr. Abba Aliyu was conferred with the traditional title of Wakilin Hasken Waja (Ambassador of Light for Waja) by the Bala Waja.

The project’s hydropower component is expected to be completed by UNIDO in January 2026.
