Gombe Governor Visits Billiri, Donates N10m To Families Of Easter Tragedy Victims

Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has paid a condolence visit to Billiri Local Government Area to commiserate with families of victims of the recent Easter tragedy that claimed five lives and left many others injured.

The governor, who was at the palace of the Mai Tangle, Dr. Danladi Sanusi Maiyamba, on Wednesday, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a tragic loss not only to the affected families but to the entire state.

“This is one of those moments that reminds us of the fragility of life and the ultimate will of the Almighty God, which no man can question,” he said.

In a gesture of compassion, Yahaya announced a donation of N2 million to each of the five bereaved families, totaling N10 million, and promised that the government would foot the medical bills of those injured and receiving treatment across hospitals in the state.

He lamented that this was the third such incident during religious processions in recent times and urged security agencies and community leaders to draw lessons and strengthen preventive measures.

“While we grieve, we must remain law-abiding. Resorting to self-help or taking the law into one’s hands will only worsen the situation,” Yahaya cautioned.

Responding to an appeal by the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Father Alphonsus Shinga, the governor directed the Commissioner of Police to fast-track the review and release of those arrested in connection with the incident.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all residents regardless of religion or ethnicity.

Earlier, Rev. Shinga expressed gratitude to the governor for his swift intervention, while the Mai Tangle commended the government’s proactive steps in preventing further escalation of tensions.

A representative of one of the bereaved families, Mr. Bakari Bawasa, also thanked the governor for his support during their time of grief.

The Chairperson of Billiri LGA, Hon. Eglah Idris, described the governor’s visit as a “balm of comfort” to the grieving community, praising his empathy and leadership.

Gov. Yahaya was accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Manassah Daniel Jatau, members of the State House of Assembly, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, Chief of Staff, Abubakar Inuwa Kari, and other top government officials and stakeholders.
