The Gombe State Government has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop solar mini-grids for the electrification of underserved rural communities across the state.
The agreement, signed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, brings together the State Government, the Local Government Joint Project Development Agency, and MIDS Dynamics Ltd., with each party committing agreed investments toward the project.
Speaking to journalists after the MoU signing, Chairman of Gombe Local Government and Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Barr. Sani Ahmad Haruna, said the initiative aligns with requirements from international development partners, including the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB), for accessing renewable energy grant facilities.
Haruna disclosed that the first phase of the project will be implemented in Talasse and other non-grid-connected communities in Balanga Local Government Area. Subsequent phases will cover Shongom and additional local government areas.
He said the goal is to expand access to electricity through clean, off-grid solutions that will improve livelihoods and boost economic activity in rural regions.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of MIDS Dynamics Ltd, Engr. Halis Muhammad, said the project targets over one million households across Gombe in the next three years.
“We have completed comprehensive feasibility studies, and we are ready to deploy modern mini-grid infrastructure to accelerate rural electrification. We are currently the largest recipient of AfDB grants for off-grid energy projects in Northern Nigeria and the Sahel,” Muhammad said.
The MoU was signed during the 6th meeting of the Joint Project Development Council, held in Gombe and witnessed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Sanusi Ahmad Pindiga, signed on behalf of the state government, while the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Zubair Muhammad Umar; ALGON Chairman, Barr. Sani Ahmad Haruna; and Deputy ALGON Chairperson, Hon. Fatima Binta Bello, signed as witnesses.
The initiative is expected to enhance energy access, promote sustainable development, and support the broader goals of regional energy transition in line with global best practices.
