Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has launched the disbursement of N13.5 billion under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project to promote girl-child education and improve access to quality learning across the state.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Gombe, Yahaya said the funds would be disbursed as School Improvement Grants through the School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) of 442 secondary schools across the state.
He said the intervention was designed to upgrade school infrastructure, provide essential learning materials, and enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning in public schools.
“This intervention is another major step in our mission to make education accessible and equitable for every child in Gombe State, especially our girls,” the governor said.
He recalled that his administration had earlier disbursed N726 million under the AGILE Project as conditional cash transfers and scholarship support to 12,101 students, mostly girls, to promote school enrolment and reduce the financial burden on parents.
Yahaya warned that his government would not tolerate any form of mismanagement of the AGILE funds, emphasizing that accountability remained a key principle of his administration.
“We will not condone any act of diversion or mismanagement. These funds represent the future of our children. Anyone found wanting in the misuse of public resources will face consequences. The same standard applies here,” he warned.
The governor disclosed that the combined educational interventions under his administration now total N23.94 billion, directly benefiting 34,055 students and 442 schools across Gombe State.
He described the AGILE Project as part of his administration’s long-term vision to build a prosperous and inclusive society anchored on education, opportunity, and good governance.
“Our vision for Gombe goes beyond settling past obligations. We are building a future anchored on education, opportunity, and prosperity where every child, regardless of gender or background, has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed,” Yahaya said.
Reaffirming his commitment to fiscal discipline and inclusive development, the governor said education remains the cornerstone of his government’s transformation agenda.
“Through projects like AGILE, our scholarship schemes, and continuous reforms, we are empowering our young people to shape a brighter and more productive future for our state,” he added.
The AGILE Project, supported by the World Bank, aims to enhance learning opportunities for adolescent girls and improve educational outcomes through community-led interventions — a goal that aligns with Gombe State’s broader educational and empowerment vision.
