Gombe Line Records Major Reforms, Near-Zero Accident Rate Under Inuwa Yahaya

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s comprehensive reforms in Gombe State’s transport sector have transformed the state-owned Gombe Line into one of Nigeria’s most efficient and safety-driven public transport systems.

The Director-General and Sole Administrator of Gombe Line, Dr. Sani Sabo, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Gombe on the achievements of the company under the present administration.

Dr. Sabo described the transformation as a direct result of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s commitment to public welfare, transportation safety, and institutional reform.

“Since the creation of Gombe State in 1996, no administration has invested in public transport like Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s. In just six years, he procured 80 brand-new buses, bringing our operational fleet to 92 fully owned, roadworthy vehicles,” he said.

He explained that Gombe Line now operates across nearly all northern states, the Federal Capital Territory, and extends its services to Lagos and Port Harcourt, positioning it among the most expansive and efficiently managed state-owned transport networks in the country.

Dr. Sabo further highlighted the success of the subsidised town service introduced by the Yahaya administration, which currently operates on 11 strategic routes within the Gombe metropolis to ease the burden of transportation costs on residents.

“This initiative has eased the cost of commuting for workers, students, and traders. It even encouraged private transport companies to reduce their fares and join the effort to make transport affordable for the people,” he said.

According to him, Gombe Line has maintained a near-zero accident record, with only two minor accidents recorded in two years, one of the lowest among state-owned transport companies nationwide.

He attributed the achievement to strict adherence to safety standards, regular mechanical inspections, and continuous driver training programs.

“We have a Safety and Enforcement Committee that inspects vehicles before departure, while drivers undergo drug tests and refresher courses conducted by the FRSC, VIO, and faith-based counsellors,” Sabo said.

He also revealed that the government’s policy of centralizing motor parks under the Ibrahim Dankwambo Mega Park had significantly improved surveillance, security, and coordination across the transport system.

“Through collaboration with the Police, NDLEA, NAPTIP, and Civil Defence, we rescued 59 children from traffickers within eight months and intercepted several cases of illegal weapons and drugs,” he said.

Sabo noted that the park’s manifest system allows for the registration of all passengers and vehicles, ensuring traceability and enhanced safety. He urged residents to board vehicles only from the designated park to avoid falling prey to criminal elements.

He added that Gombe Line has diversified into courier and logistics operations, becoming the only state-owned transport company in Northern Nigeria licensed to offer such services.

“Our logistics unit handles goods under strict security procedures — every item is inspected, documented, and safely delivered,” he said.

Dr. Sabo commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his visionary leadership and unwavering support in transforming the state’s transport infrastructure, describing the reforms as a model for other states to emulate.

“Our priority is not just revenue but the safety and comfort of our people. This is Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s vision, and we are proud to be part of this transformation,” he said.
