The management of Gombe State University has confirmed a security incident at one of its female hostels, where a final-year student was attacked by an intruder in the early hours of Monday.
In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Hadu Ligari, the incident occurred during the academic break while the student was preparing for her project defence.
Ligari said that university security personnel responded promptly after the incident was reported, securing the area and ensuring the safety of other students in the hostel.
“An unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of today at the female hostel, where a final-year student was attacked by an intruder. University security responded swiftly, and immediate steps were taken to stabilise the situation,” he said.
According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor and other members of the university management visited the scene to assess the situation and monitor the response of security operatives.
The affected student reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to defend herself during the attack but has since received medical attention and is in stable condition.
“The student sustained injuries to her hands during the incident. She has been treated and is currently stable,” the statement added.
The university management reassured students, staff, parents and the general public of its commitment to safety, noting that additional measures were being put in place to strengthen campus security.
Ligari said the institution remained committed to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for all members of the university community.
