Gombe Veterinary Laboratory Begins Full Operations

The Gombe State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project has fully established and equipped a Veterinary Diagnostic and Disease Surveillance Laboratory at Tashan Dukku Livestock Market in Gombe Metropolis.

The facility, led by Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, was handed over to the Gombe State Government and is now fully operational, enhancing disease surveillance, diagnosis, and control to improve livestock health and productivity across the state.

For years, livestock diseases have caused significant economic losses to farmers due to reduced productivity and uncontrolled outbreaks. The new laboratory, attached to the upgraded Gombe Veterinary Clinic—now a hospital—aims to transform veterinary services in the state.

With advanced diagnostic capabilities, the facility will provide early detection of livestock diseases, ensure accurate diagnoses, conduct surveillance of zoonotic diseases, and improve livestock productivity through better disease control.

Beyond livestock health, the laboratory also strengthens public health measures by monitoring zoonotic diseases like brucellosis, tuberculosis, anthrax, and avian influenza, which can be transmitted from animals to humans.

This milestone positions Gombe as a leader in science-driven veterinary healthcare, ensuring safer animal products, improved food safety, and a stronger agricultural economy.
