Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has flagged off the payment of N1.5 billion as scholarship allowances to 18,750 students of Gombe origin studying in various tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony held on Tuesday at the Government House, Gombe, Yahaya said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to improving access to quality education and supporting students’ welfare amid rising living costs.
The governor said the current payment follows a 100 per cent upward review of scholarship allowances recently approved by his administration.
“This scholarship payment is part of our deliberate strategy to support our younger generation, improve learning outcomes and empower our youths for a better future,” Yahaya said.
He urged beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make the state proud through academic excellence, noting that education remains “the greatest equalizer.”
The payment covers both fresh and returning students, with some beneficiaries receiving consolidated allowances for up to four academic sessions.
Yahaya disclosed that the exercise also includes special support packages for students with disabilities, depending on their level of study and course requirements.
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to ensure that every Gombe citizen, regardless of background or gender, has access to quality education and the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
In recognition of his consistent investment in education, representatives of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Gombe State Students’ Association (GOSSA) presented a gift of honour to the governor.
They described Yahaya as a leader who keeps his promises and restores hope to students across the state.
