Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has warned intending pilgrims for the 2025 Hajj against engaging in drug trafficking, money laundering, and other acts capable of tarnishing Nigeria’s image.
Yahaya gave the warning on Sunday during a farewell ceremony for the pilgrims in Gombe.
The governor was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Ibrahim Njodi.
He urged the pilgrims to steer clear of individuals involved in illicit activities and to avoid being used unknowingly for illegal dealings.
“Anybody caught carrying prohibited items, especially narcotic drugs, whose penalty in Saudi Arabia is death, should have himself or herself to blame,” Yahaya said.
He advised the pilgrims to conduct themselves with dignity and obey all laws and regulations of both Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.
The governor also cautioned against unruly behaviour, warning that any misconduct would attract appropriate sanctions.
He tasked officials of the Gombe State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board to prioritize the welfare of pilgrims and discharge their duties diligently.
The Executive Secretary of the board, Mr. Saadu Hassan, said 957 pilgrims from Gombe would participate in the Hajj.
He said the first batch of 512 pilgrims would depart on Monday, while the remaining 445 would travel on Tuesday.
Also speaking, the Emir of Dukku and Chairman of the pilgrims’ board, Alhaji Haruna Rashid II, commended the governor for his continued support.
He said the support had contributed to a smooth Hajj preparation process in the state.
