Gov. Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State on Sunday bade farewell to 962 intending pilgrims from the state for the 2025 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, addressed the pilgrims at a farewell ceremony in Gombe.
He warned them against any form of misconduct, especially drug trafficking and careless handling of luggage, noting that such offences attract severe penalties in Saudi Arabia.
“Let me make it clear: drug trafficking carries capital punishment in Saudi Arabia. Do not, under any circumstance, carry items or luggage you did not pack yourself,” Yahaya warned.
He urged the pilgrims to be disciplined, vigilant, and maintain proper hygiene throughout the pilgrimage.
The governor reminded them that Hajj is a sacred obligation and not a shopping trip, urging them to focus on worship and prayers.
He said the state government, through the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, had made adequate arrangements for a smooth exercise, including suitable accommodation, medical support, and experienced guides.
“Over 95 per cent of our pilgrims this year are first-timers. We have ensured that they will be supported and guided appropriately,” he said.
Yahaya also advised the pilgrims to conduct themselves with dignity and respect the laws of Saudi Arabia, stressing that they are ambassadors of Gombe and Nigeria.
He urged the accompanying officials to discharge their duties diligently and ensure the pilgrims receive proper guidance.
The governor prayed for the safe departure and return of the pilgrims, and urged them to pray for peace, unity, and an end to insecurity in Nigeria.
“I wish you Allah’s guidance, safe flight, and Hajj Mabroor,” he added.
In his remarks, the Emir of Dukku and Chairman of the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Alhaji Haruna Abdulkadir Rashid, thanked the governor for his continued support.
He advised the pilgrims to avoid extravagance and focus on the spiritual purpose of the Hajj.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Sa’adu Hassan, commended the governor for the timely provision of accommodation and medical facilities for the pilgrims.
He said Gombe was among the best-prepared states in the country for the 2025 Hajj, attributing the success to Yahaya’s leadership.
Islamic scholars also addressed the gathering, offering sermons and spiritual guidance on the rites and conduct expected during the pilgrimage.
Special prayers were offered for a successful Hajj and for peace and prosperity in Gombe State and Nigeria.
