A petition urging the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate allegations of financial recklessness has been filed against the Federal Polytechnic Mubi’s governing council. The petition, submitted by human rights lawyer Mohammad Aliyu on behalf of concerned citizens of Mubi, accuses the council of mismanaging the institution’s funds in violation of public financial regulations.
According to the petition, over N100 million has allegedly been spent on protocol services within two months of the council chairman and members assuming office. If unchecked, the petition claims this spending pattern could amount to N600 million on protocol services within a year, contravening the Public Procurement Act, 2007, and the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
Aliyu emphasized the need for an urgent and thorough investigation by the ICPC to ensure compliance with financial laws and to protect the institution’s resources.
Meanwhile, the Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, has dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. In a statement, the JAC described the petitioners as a “faceless group” and called on stakeholders and the public to disregard the claims.
The Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, established in 1979, is one of Nigeria’s respected institutions, offering diverse diploma and undergraduate programs accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
As the matter garners public interest, stakeholders and the polytechnic community await the ICPC’s findings, hopeful for transparency and accountability in resolving the issue.
