Independence: Ndume Supports 5,000 Pregnant Women with Health Kits in Borno

As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence Anniversary, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has distributed free maternal health kits and essential drugs to no fewer than 5,000 pregnant women across the nine local government areas of his constituency.

The health intervention, conducted in collaboration with the Gombe State University Teaching Hospital, aims to improve maternal and child health and reduce preventable deaths during pregnancy and childbirth.

Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony held in Biu Local Government Area on Wednesday, Senator Ndume, who was represented by Alhaji Adamu Yamta, said the programme is part of his ongoing efforts to support grassroots healthcare delivery and complement government initiatives in the sector.

According to him, each beneficiary will receive six months of free antenatal care, medical consultations, and pregnancy-related medications. The distributed maternity kits contain wrappers, diapers, sanitary pads, antiseptics, nutritional supplements, and baby toiletries.

Also speaking, Hon. Usman Shehu Babandi, Senior Legislative Aide to Senator Ndume, said about 550 pregnant women in Biu LGA alone are expected to benefit from the programme. He reiterated the Senator’s commitment to bridging healthcare gaps in the region.

“Senator Ndume remains steadfast in his drive to enhance access to quality medical care for women and children. He is also pursuing the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Kwaya Kusar, which will serve as a major healthcare hub for Southern Borno,” Babandi stated.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of Gombe State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Aminu Umar, represented at the event, commended Senator Ndume for what he described as a “model of legislative compassion,” saying the initiative would go a long way in saving lives.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Senator and prayed for his continued health and success.

Dignitaries present at the event included Hon. Babangida Garba, Hon. Musa Maulut, and Hon. Iliya Shaffa, among others.
