Concerned students and stakeholders at Kashim Ibrahim University (KIU) have raised alarm following an incident involving a 300-level Chemistry Education student, Amina Mamman Mustapha, who was threatened and robbed while commuting near the university campus.
According to reports, Amina boarded a commercial tricycle (keke napep) in the Njimtilo area, where she found two other passengers—a man and a young woman dressed in a niqab. Shortly after another female passenger boarded and disembarked, Amina was left sitting between the man and the woman.
During the journey, the man and the woman demanded that Amina hand over her phone. When she refused, they threatened her with a knife. Fearing for her safety, Amina surrendered her phone. The assailants then dropped her off at Njimtilo, where she was assisted by another keke driver who took her to the Old Airport area.
This incident highlights the growing insecurity within and around the university community, raising serious concerns about the safety of students on and off campus, especially during daylight hours.
In response, the students of KIU have called on the Borno State government, university management, and security agencies to take immediate and decisive action. They urge the implementation of enhanced security measures, awareness campaigns for students, and a thorough investigation into the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“This is not an isolated case. Without urgent intervention, more students are at risk,” said the concerned students in a statement prepared by Ahmed Haruna Dauda from the Mass Communication Department, KIU.
The students stress the importance of safeguarding lives within the academic environment and surrounding communities to foster a safe atmosphere conducive to learning.
