Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has announced the establishment of a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the December 8 shooting incident in Lamurde Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of ten women and an eleven-year-old girl.
Governor Fintiri made the announcement during a visit to Lamurde and five affected communities in the Suwa District on Tuesday. He assured residents that the investigation will be open, fair, and thorough, with the goal of uncovering the circumstances of the tragedy and ensuring justice for the victims.
Appealing for calm, the governor emphasized that the state government remains committed to due process and accountability. He noted that the Adamawa State Peace Commission has been engaging youths, elders, clergy, and community leaders from the affected areas to foster a peaceful resolution.
Describing the killings as “very unfortunate,” Governor Fintiri said the victims were innocent and defenseless. He disclosed that the judicial panel will be headed by a retired High Court judge and tasked with examining both the immediate and remote causes of the incident, as well as making recommendations for reconciliation and lasting peace.
Governor Fintiri also assured families of the victims that the government will provide support, including assistance for education and livelihoods. During his visit, he inspected damaged areas and promised an increased security presence to protect lives and property. He further noted that agencies such as SEMA and NEMA are on the ground assisting displaced persons, and pledged that relief efforts will continue despite ongoing security challenges.
Stressing that “peace has no alternative,” the governor urged all stakeholders, including religious leaders and people of goodwill, to promote dialogue, understanding, and mutual trust. He expressed confidence that peace will return as communities embrace reconciliation.
Speaking on behalf of the affected communities, the District Head of Lamurde, Pwahomakai Joseph, and Napwamwa Istifanus recounted how the crisis began and appealed for decisive government intervention to restore lasting peace between the Bachama and Chobo communities.
Governor Fintiri’s visit aimed to gather first-hand information, engage with victims’ families and community leaders, and ensure that the truth behind the incident is fully understood. He called for calm, unity, and restraint, warning against actions that could escalate tensions.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace, security, and coexistence among all ethnic groups, Governor Fintiri stated that no tribe or community will be marginalized and promised strengthened dialogue, security coordination, and community engagement to prevent future conflicts in Adamawa State.
