The Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri and the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce five new degree programmes as part of efforts to deepen access to tertiary education in Nigeria.
The formal signing ceremony took place on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the University of Maiduguri. The new programmes include Accounting, Mass Communication, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, and Public Administration.
The Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAID, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, and the University Registrar signed on behalf of the university. Representing the Federal Polytechnic Bauchi were the Rector, Dr. Dalhatu Saidu Abubakar, and the Registrar, Alhaji Kasimu Salihu Abubakar.
In his remarks, Dr. Abubakar commended the University of Maiduguri for its longstanding support and commitment to educational development. He noted that the collaboration would provide students in Bauchi and surrounding areas greater access to university degrees without the need to travel far from home. He also expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended by the host university.
Responding, Professor Mele reaffirmed the university’s resolve to expand its reach and promote inclusive higher education. According to him, the initiative is not merely about awarding academic qualifications but about “empowering students to take the next step in their lives.”
“If they can bring the university closer to them,” he said, “then they’re truly making a difference.”
The agreement is expected to take effect from the next academic session, with both institutions pledging to uphold academic standards and provide quality education across the new programmes.
