The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has qualified to represent the North-East zone in 14 sporting events at the forthcoming Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) competition, scheduled to hold in Jos, Plateau State, in November 2025.
This follows the institution’s outstanding performance at the NUGA preliminary qualifiers hosted by Gombe State University, where UNIMAID athletes secured top positions across multiple disciplines.
Speaking in Gombe on Saturday, Sept. 27, the University’s Director of Sports, Prof. Mohammed Nayawo, described the performance as “exceptional” and commended the athletes for their dedication. He also praised the coaches for their professionalism and called for intensified preparations ahead of the main event in Jos.
“Our athletes have shown character and commitment. I thank the University management for their support and assure that we will be aiming for medals at the national stage,” Nayawo said.
Also speaking, Deputy Director of Sports, Mr. Amos Chiroma, applauded the players and coaches for their hard work and urged the coaching crew to commence immediate training sessions.
“We are proud of this achievement. The goal now is to surpass our previous performance at the last NUGA Games held in Lagos,” Chiroma said.
In their remarks, Sports Finance Officer, Mallam Musa Gulani, and Sports Medical Personnel, RN Abdulnazif Mohammed Abubakar, expressed appreciation to the university management for providing financial support, medical supplies, and sports equipment, which ensured the welfare and safety of athletes and officials during the qualifiers.
