The University of Maiduguri has received a delegation from the Federal Government on a compliance assessment visit regarding the White Paper recommendations of the 2024 Presidential Visitation Panel.
The delegation, led by Mr. James Ochere from the Federal Ministry of Education, arrived at the Senate Annex of the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building on Thursday.
The visit, according to the ministry, is part of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening governance and accountability in tertiary institutions across the country.
It will be recalled that in April 2021, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Visitor to federal universities, directed the constitution of a Presidential Visitation Panel through the Ministry of Education to evaluate the performance and governance structures of tertiary institutions nationwide.
Speaking during the visit, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s oversight and reaffirmed the university’s dedication to implementing all lawful directives.
“We commenced implementation of the White Paper recommendations as soon as they were received, in line with our commitment to due process and institutional growth,” Mele stated.
He commended the Federal Government for its continuous support to the university system and reiterated the institution’s role as a Centre of Excellence in teaching, research and community service.
In his remarks, Mr. Ochere said the team would engage with the University Management and Union Leaders to assess the level of compliance with the recommendations of the Visitation Panel.
He noted that the exercise is designed to ensure that reforms aimed at improving the standard of tertiary education are effectively implemented.
