Mentally Unstable Woman Arrested for Alleged Killing of Fellow IDP in Borno

The Borno State Police Command has arrested a woman suspected to be mentally unstable for allegedly killing a fellow Internally Displaced Person (IDP) in Monguno Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, Oct. 10, at about 4:35 p.m., was reported by one Modu Kolomi of the RRR IDP Camp, Monguno.

Security analyst, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the development in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday.

Makama stated that the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Yagana Zara of the Water Board IDP Camp, allegedly attacked Kolomi’s wife, Yagana Abba Butu, 30, with a wooden stirrer, inflicting severe injuries that led to her death.

“The suspect, said to be mentally challenged, allegedly beat the victim severely, resulting in fatal internal injuries,” he said.

Makama added that police operatives in Monguno responded promptly, rescued the suspect from mob action, and evacuated the victim to the General Hospital, Monguno, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.

The body of the deceased was deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy and later released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

He said the suspect has since been transferred to Maiduguri for psychiatric evaluation at a state-owned mental health facility, while the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has commenced a detailed investigation into the incident.

As of the time of this report, the Borno State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the matter.
