NASU Disowns Letter on 30% CONTTA Increase, Says Talks Ongoing

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) says it has not signed any agreement with the Federal Government on the reported 30 per cent increase in the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA).

In a circular issued on Tuesday and addressed to branch secretaries of universities and inter-university centres, NASU said the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government was still ongoing.

The circular, signed by the union’s General Secretary, Prince Peters A. Adeyemi, noted that the union’s attention was drawn to a letter dated March 30, 2026, conveying a 30 per cent increase in the Consolidated Salary Structure as CONTTA for non-academic staff in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

“We wish to state unequivocally that NASU is yet to sign any agreement with the Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed-led Federal Government Expanded Tertiary Institutions Negotiation Committee, as the process of renegotiation is ongoing,” the union said.

NASU expressed surprise at the content of the letter reportedly signed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, regarding the purported increase.

The union, however, urged its members nationwide to remain calm and await further directives from the national leadership.

The development comes amid ongoing discussions between the Federal Government and tertiary institution unions over the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement covering welfare and allowances for non-academic staff.
