The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to embark on a nationwide protest on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025.
This followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government to address several outstanding issues concerning members of the two unions.
In a circular dated Oct. 6 and jointly signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, NASU General Secretary, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU National President, the unions directed all branch chairmen across universities and inter-university centres to commence mobilisation ahead of the protest.
The protest, according to the circular, is to press home demands which include the alleged unjust disbursement of N50 billion earned allowances, delays in renegotiating the 2009 agreements with the Federal Government, non-payment of two months’ outstanding salaries, unpaid salary arrears of 25% and 30%, and non-remittance of third-party deductions for May and June 2022.
Although the Federal Ministry of Education had inaugurated a Joint Consultative Committee to address the unions’ grievances, JAC said meetings held on Sept. 19 and Oct. 6 yielded little progress.
The unions have therefore directed all branches to hold a joint congress on Wednesday, Oct. 8 to prepare for the protest scheduled for the following day.
The protest will feature prayer sessions, protest marches within campuses, display of placards and press briefings.
“All members of NASU and SSANU in federal and state universities are expected to strictly comply with this directive,” the statement said.
